Jack Straw - EU Democratic Deficit

It’s interesting that Jack Straw has now called for the abolition of the European Parliament.

The Guardian reports Straw, speaking at an IPPR seminar, as saying:

"I am now clear that there is a major democratic deficit within the EU. And it is absolutely certain, in my judgment, that the mechanism that was established 30 years ago to fill this gap of the democratic deficit, which was a directly elected European parliament, has not worked and, in my judgment, cannot work in that form. And the paradox is that as the European parliament has been given more powers it has become less, not more, legitimate and that is shown by the drop in the average [election] turnout across Europe."

It was Jack Straw who, as Home Secretary 1997-2001, refused to rid the EU elections of the ‘closed list’ system whereby the voter can only vote for a party and not a candidate.

Whatever the reasons for Jack Straw’s sudden dislike for the European Parliament, worrying about its democratic deficit isn’t one of them.

Perhaps he's no longer in the running for an EU sinecure, BJ. This sort of pronouncement is usually the preserve of has-beens. Oh, wait ...

Spot on Fausty - I always wonder if there is a need for redemption within these individuals.

BJ

rumour has it he's standing down at the next GE and will take up a post as a regional Police Commissioner, like his mate fat Prescott.

I always think of these fools as political bunny boilers NewsboyCap - I wish that they'd realize that it's time to go.
Their brands are totally tainted - Straw and Prescott - but you can bet that the fools out their will vote them into these positions again.
